Abstract: Language and metaphor play an important role in clinical hypnosis and especially in the work of Milton H. Erickson, his students, and those following. Through a mixture of humor, storytelling, and demonstrations, Rob Voyle will teach us/remind us about the science and art of asking powerful questions. These questions have the power to open us up to our connection to the source of our life (whatever/whomever that is for you and your clients/patients). Rob will share how to utilize metaphor to help people discover their core purpose and understand the violation of a client’s core purpose as a source of distress. When we clarify our core purpose, it becomes a touchstone and provides a sense of meaning for us and all those with whom we live, work, and love.
Learning Objectives: As a result of attending this presentation participants will be able to:
1. Describe the differences between empowering and disempowering questions and know how to craft them.
2. Note and use a client’s metaphoric language to deepen awareness and empathy with the client.
3. Evoke and use a client’s simple metaphors to quickly determine a client’s core purpose and state of resourcefulness.
4. Use a client’s core purpose to articulate their stress and existential distress, and to be able to restore a state of resourcefulness.
