Abstract: The Level 1 workshop, the first step in the certification program for clinical hypnosis, is intended for licensed health professionals (licensed and in training), including physicians, nurses, psychologists, dentists, counselors, social workers, and those in related fields. In this intensive three-day course, participants receive in-depth training in the foundations of clinical hypnosis and will learn about the principles and process of hypnotic elicitation, suggestions, and treatment integration. The workshop is a mix of didactic presentations, demonstrations, experiential exercises, and faculty-led small group mentored practice tailored to the specific needs and learning styles of each participant. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have been taught the basic skills required to utilize clinical hypnosis and begin to apply it to their practice. There is extensive research demonstrating the effectiveness of hypnosis in treating many mind-body and behavioral health conditions.

Learning Objectives: Specific learning objectives for each teaching segment of the course are included in the timed agenda. However, upon completion of the workshop, participants will be equipped to integrate the workshop’s key learning outcomes into their clinical work, such as:

  • To facilitate hypnotic trance and appropriately reorient patients/clients from a trance state.
  • To apply four or more strategies for facilitating the intensification of trance.
  • To describe four conditions in which hypnosis might be successfully utilized in their clinical practice.
  • To rapidly establish rapport and the hypnotic relationship across developmental ages.
  • To facilitate change, ego-strengthen, and reduce stress and impediments to change.
  • To enhance cost-effective, collaborative, person-centered treatment.
  • To empower clients and patients to build skills for better health.
  • To learn a highly creative, broad-ranging technique for use in mental health and integrative medicine.
