Abstract: This two-hour program will focus on using hypnosis for managing pain from two types of acute pain etiologies: acute pain crisis and procedural pain. The presenter will provide theoretical background and clinical demonstration for using hypnosis with both types of pain. Hypnosis for crisis involves very rapid, direct inductions. For procedural pain, patients undergo a hypnotic session well before the medical procedure (e.g., surgery, dentistry, childbirth, burn care). The procedural hypnotical induction makes use of priming, confusion, amnesia, and post-hypnotic suggestion. The presenter will describe each of these hypnotic techniques and then demonstrate them.
This is a Clinical Conversation – one in a series; Appropriate for beginners – advanced.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe the difference between treating acute and chronic pain
- List and utilize one quick hypnotic induction for patients in crisis
- List and utilize one induction for procedural pain
- Describe how principles of priming, confusion, and amnesia can be integrated into a hypnotic intervention for procedural pain
