Description: This workshop is intended for health professionals who want to learn about the emerging field of psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) and how hypnosis can support individuals in this context. Participants will gain an understanding of the primary agents used in PAT, their neurobiological effects, therapeutic indications, and a typical protocol for preparation, dosing, and integration. The session will address ethical and legal considerations, clinical risks, and principles of harm reduction. 

A central focus is the application of clinical hypnosis to assist clients during the preparation and integration phases of psychedelic experiences. Through a blend of presentations, group discussions, and experiential exercises, attendees will explore hypnotic principles and interventions that clarify intention, facilitate navigation of expanded states, and promote integration of insights. The workshop will highlight how hypnosis can evoke transformative and “mystical” experiences and support emotional and behavioral change, all grounded in the latest neuroscience and clinical research. Join us to deepen your understanding of this emerging field and expand your therapeutic skills for working with clients interested in or undergoing psychedelic-assisted therapy. 

Learning Objectives:  

1.  Advanced Workshop Introduction and Overview: Exploring the intersection between psychedelic assisted therapy and clinical hypnosis 

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: Describe two similarities between hypnotic and psychedelic states

2. Brief history of psychedelic use

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: 

  • Describe the historical development of psychedelic therapies from indigenous traditions to contemporary clinical research 
  • Identify two major milestones in the modern resurgence of psychedelic research
  • Identify two potential clinical applications of combining hypnosis with psychedelic therapy

3. Introduction to psychedelics

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: 

  • Identify four commonly studied psychedelic or psychedelic-adjacent compounds used in therapeutic settings 
  • Describe at least one therapeutic mechanism associated with one compound discussed

4. Psychedelics and clinical hypnosis: Neurobiology and neuroplasticity

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: 

  • Describe two neurobiological mechanisms associated with psychedelic states 
  • Explain how neuroplasticity contributes to therapeutic change in psychedelic-assisted therapy 
  • Identify two similarities between hypnotic and psychedelic shifts in attention and perception
  1. Psychedelics and therapeutic applications

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: 

  • Identify four mental health conditions currently studied in psychedelic-assisted therapy 
  • Describe how hypnosis complements psychedelic-assisted treatment for at least one of the conditions discussed 
  1. Psychedelics, clinical hypnosis, and trauma therapy

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: 

  • Describe two potential benefits of psychedelic-assisted therapy for trauma treatment 
  • Identify one way clinical hypnosis can support trauma processing before or after a psychedelic session

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: 

  • Describe mystical experience as described in psychedelic research literature

  1. Hypnotic techniques for preparation and session facilitation

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: 

  • Describe two strategies for psychological preparation prior to psychedelic sessions 
  • Identify one hypnotic technique to facilitate/support safety 
  • Describe and apply two hypnotic strategies for affect regulation

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: 

  • Describe two goals of integration following psychedelic experiences
