Abstract:
Communication comes in packages, it is embodied. Gestures are one element of that package. They have multiple and varied purposes: they punctuate and augment our messages; represent ideas and concepts; serve as reference points; and can be used to engage, distract and or assess responsiveness. Their subtlety makes them ideal for clinical work as they are not consciously attended to yet influence perception, understanding, and meaning; they are core elements of limbic communication. We routinely employ them in the course of normal conversation, harnessing them mindfully with strategic intent is an easy transition.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:
1. Describe the relative proportions of unconscious and conscious processes.
2. List three types of gestures.
3. Provide a working definition of “embodiment.”
4. Identify two benefits of incorporating gestures into thier clinical work.
5. Report on the percentage of the brain that is dedicated to processing visual
information.
6. List there dimensions in the “package of communication.”
