This four-day workshop will focus on the use of hypnosis, meditation and motivational interview to treat acute pain and manage chronic suffering. The workshop will train participants in an eight-module psychotherapy approach for managing chronic pain and illness that is described in Patterson and Mendoza’s Clinical Pain for Hypnosis (2024). Participants will go through several cycles of learning the science and theory behind a hypnotic approach, observing the trainer perform an induction and then practicing the skills on a partner. The practice sessions will focus on learning a module of a complex induction well, and then combining several modules in a way that participants can offer advanced, non-linear inductions to their patients. This offers an effective way to learn complex concepts that is low stress and fun. The modern science of the unconscious will be emphasized as well as Ericksonian approaches. We will also us a neurophysiological conceptualization of a non-dualistic self to facilitate both meditation and hypnosis. The practice exercises with participants will be designed so they will be better able to manage pain and suffering in patients, but also will find examples that are useful in their own lives.
At the end of this workshop, particpants will be able to
- Describe the difference between acute and chronic pain
- Articulate hypnotic approaches to acute and chronic pain
- Describe the components of a biopsychosocial assessment approach to chronic pain and illness
- Perform six approaches to hypnosis that were used by Erickson later in his career
- Describe at least four concepts from the modern science of unconscious that apply to hypnosis
- Articulate a scientific based conceptualization of the illusion of self that leads to meditation training.
