Dates: April 4, 2027
Time: 11:00AM–6:45 PM (Eastern Time)
Format: Live Zoom
CE Credit: 6.5 CE hours

Please note: To participate in ASCH’s advanced workshops, you must have completed a Level 1 Clinical Workshop.

This introductory workshop explores the intersection of dissociation, addictive behaviors, attachment, and hypnosis from a clinical perspective. Participants will be introduced to attachment patterns that influence dissociation and addiction, common presentations of dissociation, the potential functions of addictive behaviors, and the importance of recognizing when clients may need additional support with stabilization and affect regulation.

The workshop will introduce hypnosis as a supportive clinical tool, emphasizing grounding, resource development, present-moment awareness, and emotional regulation. Participants will also consider how therapeutic pacing, client readiness, and individual differences influence the selection of interventions when working with clients who experience dissociative and addictive processes.

Through clinical examples, guided discussion, and introductory experiential exercises, participants will explore practical ways to incorporate hypnosis into treatment while maintaining attention to client safety, therapeutic boundaries, and the need for individualized care. The workshop is designed to provide a foundation for further learning rather than advanced training in the assessment or treatment of complex dissociative presentations.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the basic relationship among attachment, dissociation, affect regulation, and addictive behaviors.
  • Recognize common clinical indicators of dissociation that may arise during interviews and therapy sessions.
  • Explain how addictive behaviors may function as attempts to manage distress, regulate emotions, or avoid difficult internal experiences.
  • Identify introductory grounding, stabilization, and resource-development strategies that support present-moment awareness and emotional regulation.
  • Describe ways hypnosis may be used to support stabilization and affect regulation when working with clients experiencing dissociative and addictive processes.
  • Recognize basic clinical considerations and potential risks when using hypnosis with dissociative clients, including the importance of pacing, readiness, and therapeutic containment.
