President's Message

By Phil Colosimo, PhD
ASCH President

In my first message as ASCH President, I write to you with updates on ASCH membership, publications, and upcoming events.

The past two months have been an awakening for ASCH. We’ve realized that in order to sustain our society’s existence and fulfill our yearly goals, we must increase our membership. To that end, there has been great interest in our Level 1 clinical hypnosis courses, with over 100 students waiting to attend. We are so happy to see these webinars gaining momentum. Once completed, these exceptional presentations are preserved in our library, contributing to the financial success of our society.

Unfortunately, though Samantha Price and Kelsey Kind have sent faculty interest requests to our memberships, we have not had enough interested faculty to teach these courses. We need your support to keep these courses going. As with our group training, these courses are taught online. If this is something that would interest you, please contact Katherine Macay at info@asch.net. Please note, faculty members are required to take a Teaching and Consultation Workshop (TCW) before teaching our students in Level 1 and 2, and advanced courses.

Did you know that as a member of ASCH, you are also eligible for membership in the International Society of Hypnosis (ISH)? Our former president and current ISH representative, Anita Jung, recently shared that ASCH, as a constituent society of ISH, makes it possible for our members to be considered for ISH membership. ISH membership offers access to international conferences, global networking opportunities, and resources that support the advancement of hypnosis research and practice worldwide. You can learn more about your ISH membership at https://www.ishhypnosis.org. Anita Jung also shared that the World Health Organization is working to include clinical hypnosis as another means of clinical care in medicine. As clinicians we know just how important this work is, and it is incredible to see its recognition on the international stage.

David B. Reid is beginning his tenure as editor of our official ASCH publication, the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis, with a bang! Thanks to the support of former editor Stephen Lankton, he’s smoothly transitioned into this role. Recently, he has been approved for more article reviewers and is now looking for more textbook reviewers. If you’re interested in contributing to our journal, please click here. There you will find detailed instructions on how to submit your manuscript electronically via our easy-to-use system, ScholarOne Manuscripts. Remember, as an ASCH member you have access to current and past issues of AJCH online!

In the coming months, our education section plans to present some fantastic workshop programs. On June 13, ASCH will offer an Advanced Workshop: Facilitation and Clinical Use of Mystical Experiences in Hypnosis. In July, we’ll host a webinar on Helping Children Help Themselves with Hypnosis on July 16 and host an all-day, virtual ASCH Teaching and Consultation Workshop on July 18. Finally in September, ASCH will sponsor an Advanced Workshop — Planning Treatment Using Clinical Hypnosis: Practical Applications for Common and Not so Common Conditions — from September 12-14 and offer Level 1 and 2 all-day virtual workshops, from September 18-21.

Lastly, we need your help to share this important work with new professionals in our field! Clinical Hypnosis is a progressive treatment that brings lifetime benefit to all clinicians. Our society needs evidence-based approaches to deal with the dramatic stresses we face and to recognize the benefits that clinical hypnosis provides.
