Abstract:
Practicing as an Ericksonian therapist for over thirty years, Dr. Short has a great deal of experience working with the client’s unconscious resources as well as conscious resources. After seeing that some clients (and some therapists) are uncomfortable with hypnosis, Dr. Short began teaching others how to engage people’s unconscious intelligence in problem solving endeavors without requiring altered states of consciousness or formal trance induction. In this way, the experience of free choice is maintained as the therapist guides the therapeutic endeavor using an invisible hand.

The research-based methods Dr. Short teaches rely mostly on creative imagination, storytelling and symbolic imagery as well as strategic framing effects, which are collectively known as choice architecture. These techniques, which include: contrasting effects, implementation intentions, prediction, reimagining, and incubated cognition; are transtheoretical, meaning that they can be incorporated into any school of thought. The presentation will also address the use of choice architecture in psychotherapy—a topic that is gaining a lot of research attention in behavioral economics. While this presentation will be of special interest to Ericksonian therapists and traditional hypnotherapists, anyone practicing psychotherapy will find practical benefit from the techniques, which can be used with or without hypnosis.

Dr. Short has a wealth of information on unconscious process work and its clinical applications. With these new skills, participants will learn how to empower their clients with unexpected possibilities. This seminar will be an impressive mix of history, live demonstrations, inspiring clinical examples, and opportunities for hands-on practice.

Learning Objectives:
1 . Judge the value of unconscious intelligence for clinical applications in contrast to traditional talk therapy.

2. Debate methods to engage people’s unconscious intelligence in problem solving endeavors, without the formal use of hypnosis or altered states of consciousness.

3. Use predetermined criteria to judge eight different methods for engaging unconscious intelligence
