This course\, grounded in Ego State Therapy conceptualizes somatic symptoms as meaningful messages from the body and the system of self. These symptoms may reflect internal conflicts\, adaptive reasoning\, or survival strategies. Ego State Therapy provides several ways to communicate with the body and/or ego states to explore unconscious causes\, contributing factors as well as potential solutions for somatic symptoms. Utilizing ideomotor signaling and other unconscious ways of exploring\, participants will learn how to access and communicate with states to elicit information about safety\, function\, contributing factors\, and potential pathways for resolution of somatic symptoms. Emphasis is placed on therapeutic intention\, hypnotic suggestions\, and internal negotiations that are respectful of the whole self within a trauma-informed\, phase-oriented framework. The training will review and apply core Ego State Therapy (EST) principles\, including Lemke’s adapted P-Principles\, which serve as a template for holding the multiplicity of self in mind when formulating hypnotic suggestions and strategies. The workshop is designed as a unique in-person\, small-group learning opportunity. The syllabus is designed so that the CE hours may count as the Level 1 Basic training that is a required component towards ASCH certification in Clinical Hypnosis. This workshop follows the most up-to-date ASCH-ERF Standards of Training for a Level 1 workshop\, and proposes 21.5 hours of CE hours. The curriculum includes all didactic educational topics and experiential group practice exercises required by ASCH-ERF in a Level 1/Basic Clinical Hypnosis Workshop. We will define hypnosis\, offer a brief history of hypnosis\, and correct common misperceptions about the natural process of hypnosis and brain state of trance. An overview of the neuroscience of the trance state will be offered. Participants will be shown various demonstrations of the hypnotic process\, utilizing both audience volunteers and video recordings of work with actual clients. Each stage of the hypnotic process will be taught\, explored\, and practiced. The workshop includes 3 separate small group practice sessions (totaling 65 minutes practice time per student)\, with one practice session taking place on each of the workshop days. She completed her graduate work at George Washington University and started her career at the Washington Pain and Rehabilitation Center in Washington\, DC. She went from there to VCU Health System in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as a rehab psychologist\, providing services to a full range of rehabilitation patients on both the inpatient and outpatient service. She left VCU to work in an interdisciplinary pain clinic in the community and later went into private practice. In 2000\, she joined the medical psychology department at Sheltering Arms Hospital\, first as a staff psychologist and later as director of the department\, a post she held for 10 years.  She has recently returned to the VCU Dept. of PMR and is currently working as part of an interdisciplinary team of medical professionals at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System to provide services to patients with chronic pain due to a variety of medical conditions. She provides evaluations and psychological treatment for the management of chronic pain.  \nOther faculty include: \n \nLinda Thomson\, PhD\, APRN\, ABMH\, ABHN\, FASCH – Linda Thomson is a nurse practitioner and past president of ASCH. She is an Approved Consultant and senior faculty member for ASCH. Thomson is a Diplomate of both the American Board of Medical Hypnosis and the American Board of Hypnosis in Nursing\, and a Fellow of both ASCH and the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Association. She is president of the Northeastern Mountain Society of Clinical Hypnosis. Thomson serves on the Council of Representatives for the International Society of Hypnosis. She is the recipient of ASCH Lifetime Achievement Award. She is the founder of Hypnosis for Health and Healing and co-founder of Hypnovations: Clinical Hypnosis Education and Training. Harry Hypnopotamus – Metaphorical Tales for Children\, Volumes 1 & 2 were written by Thomson.
