SUMMARY:Hypnosis For Acute Pain (CHSNJ)
DESCRIPTION:Organization: Clinical Hypnosis Society of New Jersey (CHSNJ) \nWebsite: https://www.clinicalhypnosisnj.org/event-6380804  \nEvent Title: Hypnosis For Acute Pain  \nAgenda:  Patterson_Timed_Agenda (1) \nDates: 12/13/2025\, 11am -1:30pm ET \nLocation: virtual  \nCE: 2  \nContact :  ginnydinsmore@gmail.com Virginia Dinsmore  \nAbstract: This two-hour program will focus on using hypnosis for managing pain from two types of acute pain etiologies: acute pain crisis and procedural pain. The presenter will provide theoretical background and clinical demonstration for using hypnosis with both types of pain. Hypnosis for crisis involves very rapid\, direct inductions. For procedural pain\, patients undergo a hypnotic session well before the medical procedure (e.g.\, surgery\, dentistry\, childbirth\, burn care). The procedural hypnotical induction makes use of priming\, confusion\, amnesia\, and post-hypnotic suggestion. The presenter will describe each of these hypnotic techniques and then demonstrate them.  \nThis is a Clinical Conversation – one in a series; Appropriate for beginners – advanced. \nLearning Objectives: At the conclusion of this workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe the difference between treating acute and chronic pain \n\n\nList and utilize one quick hypnotic induction for patients in crisis \n\n\nList and utilize one induction for procedural pain \n\n\nDescribe how principles of priming\, confusion\, and amnesia can be integrated into a hypnotic intervention for procedural pain \n\nSpeaker info: David R. SUMMARY:Hypnotically Informed Psychotherapy (CHSNJ)
DESCRIPTION:Organization: Clinical Hypnosis Society of New Jersey  \nWebsite: https://www.clinicalhypnosisnj.org/events  \nEvent Title:  Hypnotically Informed Psychotherapy\, Advanced Workshop  \nAgenda: HIP_timed_agenda \nDates: 1/10/26\, 10am – 1pm ET \nLocation: Virtual  \nCE: 3  \nContact : Robert Staffin\, drstaffin@gmail.com  \nAbstract: Whether you have a background in hypnosis or are simply curious\, this course will provide a brief overview of hypnosis and then offer examples of how the principles that underlie the processes of hypnosis can be woven into one’s clinical practice regardless of one’s theoretical orientation.    \n  Hypnosis has a rich academic and clinical history. The clinician who understands the underpinnings of hypnosis\, e.g.\, how to fixate attention\, depotentiate conscious sets\, and cultivate unconscious searches\, is better able to identify\, elicit\, and utilize these naturally occurring “states” to make their clinical work more impactful.    \n  Much of what skilled clinicians do can be viewed through a hypnotic lens. This program will highlight how what you are likely doing already can be done with greater strategic and mindful intent.  \nLearning Objectives: At the conclusion of this program\, participants will be able to: \n1. List the six core competencies of Ericksonian therapy. \n2. Outline the 5 microdynamic steps of trance elicitation described by Erickson\,\n     Rossi\, and Rossi\, (1976) \n3. Define the concept of “influence ” as it is used in the social psychocology     \n     literature.  \n Speaker info: Rob Staffin\, PsyD\, ABPH is a clinical psychologist who is licensed in New Jersey and New York. He is also authorized to practice interjurisdictional psychology via telehealth by the PSYPACT Commission. Dr. Staffin received his doctorate from Yeshiva University’s Ferkauf graduate school of psychology in 1990.  He studied infant social development with Dr. Beatrice Beebe. Rob has been studying\, teaching\, and writing about hypnosis for more than 20 years.  He is an Approved Consultant of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) and a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychological Hypnosis.  Rob is the President of the Clinical Hypnosis Society of New Jersey (CHSNJ)\, a component section of ASCH.  He is the author of\, More Common Therapy: the experiential psychotherapy of Jeffrey K. Zeig\, Ph.D.  He characterizes the book as an advanced how to guide for clinicians interested in cultivating their skills in clinical hypnosis.  His most recent article\, Hypnotically Informed Psychotherapy: Erickson and Beyond\, is published online ahead of print in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. Rob maintains a private practice in Teaneck\, NJ where provides individual therapy and offers individual and group consultation both in person and remotely.  \n

The workshop is composed of a mix of didactic presentations\, demonstrations\, experiential exercises\, and faculty led small group practice tailored to the specific needs\, interests\, and learning styles of workshop participants. Clinical hypnosis deepens the work of mind-body practices such as mindfulness meditation. Adding hypnosis allows our clients/patients to become even more deeply aware of their inner states and fosters awareness of their own strengths\, resources and problem-solving abilities. There has been extensive research demonstrating its effectiveness in treating a number of mind-body conditions\, and in expediting habit change\, facilitating pain management and enhancing treatment of depression and anxiety. \nLearning Objectives:\nUpon completion of the workshop\, participants will be able to incorporate the following in their clinical practice: \n\nIdentify and demonstrate four ways to facilitate hypnotic trance and appropriately reorient patients from a trance state.\nDemonstrate three strategies for facilitating intensification of trance.\nDescribe four conditions in which hypnosis might be successfully utilized.

SUMMARY:Facilitating Insight and Healing Through Client-Generated Clean Metaphor (NTSCH)
DESCRIPTION:Organization: North Texas Society of Clinical Hypnosis (NTSCH) \nWebsite: https://www.northtexashypnosis.org/   \nEvent Title: Facilitating Insight and Healing Through Client-Generated Clean Metaphor  \nDates: 01/28/2026\, 6-7:30pm CT \nLocation: Virtual  \nCE: 2  \nContact : Tracy Payton Watson\, LPC  \nDescription: This presentation explores David Grove’s Clean Language Method\, a client-centered approach to psychotherapy that uses precise\, non-directive questioning to facilitate insight and healing through metaphor. Participants will learn how Clean Language preserves client autonomy by minimizing therapist assumptions\, interpretations\, and influence\, allowing clients’ own words and metaphors to guide therapeutic change. The session will outline the core principles of Clean Language\, including the therapist’s stance of curiosity and “notknowing\,” the role of metaphor as an organizing system of experience\, and the standardized question sets used to elicit and track client-generated metaphors. Clinical applications for trauma\, anxiety\, depression\, addiction\, chronic pain\, and somatic experiences will be discussed\, along with ethical considerations for preserving client agency and supporting trauma-informed care. Through illustrative transcripts\, case examples\, and interactive reflection\, participants will gain practical skills for integrating Clean Language into clinical practice. This CE session aligns with best practices for experiential and metaphorical therapy\, emphasizing client-led insight and emergent healing.  \nLearning Objectives:  \n1. Describe and compare Milton Erickson’s use of therapist-generated metaphor\, indirect suggestion\, and utilization with David Grove’s client-generated metaphor approach in facilitating insight and therapeutic change.   \n2. Identify at least three key distinctions in how insight and healing are conceptualized and achieved through Erickson’s strategic\, directive use of metaphor versus Grove’s nondirective Symbolic Modeling process. \n3. Apply ethical and clinical decision-making principles to determine when Ericksonian metaphor interventions or Grove’s client-led metaphor tracking are most appropriate for supporting insight and healing across diverse client presentations.  \nSpeaker info: Tracy Payton Watson\, LPC CV_8.4.23_Tracy \n

SUMMARY:ASCH Webinar: Combined Hypnotic and Pharmacological Approaches to Weight Management
DESCRIPTION:ASCH Webinar: Combined Hypnotic and Pharmacological Approaches to Weight Management\nRegister Here \nTopic: Weight Loss Management; GLP-1 & GIP mechanisms; behavioral and hypnotic approaches \nPresented by Maryanna Polukhin\, MD and Louis Damis\, PhD\, ABPP\, FASCH \nWhen: Wednesday\, February 18\, 2026\, 7:00-9:00 PM ET \nWhere: Virtual – Zoom \nCE: 2.0 \nPrice: Member: $45\, Non-Member $65\, Grad: $35\, Resident $35; includes access to both live and later on-demand viewing \nObesity prevalence is rising and is affecting the physical and psychosocial health of a large portion of our population. It is a complex\, chronic condition driven by powerful biological and behavioral forces. While GLP-1/GIP agonists have transformed the treatment landscape by addressing appetite regulation and metabolic resistance\, pharmacotherapy alone is insufficient to address the multifactorial nature of obesity and produce long-term weight maintenance. Moreover\, intensive behavioral therapy\, which yields weight-loss outcomes comparable to pharmacotherapy\, has been shown to be additive to pharmacotherapy and is now considered a necessary component of effective long-term weight management. \nThis webinar explores how GLP-1/GIP agonist therapy and behavioral interventions augmented with hypnosis can be integrated to address both the physiological and behavioral drivers of obesity. Designed for behavioral and medical health professionals\, the session reviews the neurohormonal mechanisms of GLP-1/GIP agents and practical strategies for combining these approaches to improve adherence\, durability of weight loss\, and whole-person-centered outcomes. \nAt the completion of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nList three mechanisms of satiety and metabolic changes of benefit to patients.\nDescribe the expected weight loss changes associated with pharmacological and cognitive-behavioral interventions\, as well as the impact of a combined approach.\nDescribe the limitations and side effects of pharmacological and surgical weight loss interventions\nList five behavioral techniques for weight management and the three found to be most effective for long-term maintenance.\nDescribe a four-stage hypnotic treatment plan and systematic approach to weight management.\n\nSpeaker Bios: \nDr. Maryanna Polukhin is a primary care doctor in Starling Physicians\, Hartford\, CT. She has practiced Internal Medicine for more than 20 years and is Board certified in Internal Medicine and has Board certification in Integrative Medicine. SUMMARY:Level 1 (Fundamentals) Training in Clinical Hypnosis (ISSTD)
DESCRIPTION:Organization: The International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD)  \nWebsite: https://www.isst-d.org/training-and-conferences/training-courses/asch-training/   \nEvent Title: Level 1 (Fundamentals) Training in Clinical Hypnosis at ISSTD\, Arlington\, VA  \nAgenda:  Timed_Agenda__L1_ISSTD_2026 \nDates: 02/20/2026 – 02/22/2026  \nLocation: In person – Hilton Arlington | Arlington\, VA  \nCE: 20 hours \nContact :  Eric Spiegel\, PhD – espiegelphd@gmail.com  \nAbstract: This Level 1 training in clinical hypnosis will provide trainees with a beginning understanding of the concepts\, principles and clinical applications of hypnosis. Experienced\, ASCH-certified and ASCH- approved consultant faculty will offer didactic presentations\, demonstrations\, experiential exercises\, and faculty-led small group practices of 6-7 participants to facilitate a fundamental understanding and experience of clinical hypnosis and its integration into clinical practice. At the completion of the training\, trainees will have been taught the knowledge and skills to begin the integration of clinical hypnosis strategies into the treatment of their patients. Specifically\, trainees will be able to identify and demonstrate at least three ways to facilitate hypnotic trance and to competently re-orient a patient from a trance state\, demonstrate at least three strategies for facilitating intensification of trance\, and describe at least four clinical conditions in which hypnotic strategies can be successfully utilized. Trainees will have been introduced to clinical hypnosis as a neurophysiological phenomenon\, a mental state of absorption implicated in neuroplasticity and change\, as well as a creative clinical skill set of relationship development in the service of collaboratively facilitating mental and physical health. This training is especially geared towards therapists treating traumatized and dissociative persons. Upon successful completion of this L1 training in clinical hypnosis\, trainees will be eligible for ASCH membership as well as for participation in Level II (Intermediate) and Advanced Level ASCH approved workshops.  \nLearning Objectives: (see agenda)  \nSpeaker info: Eric Spiegel\, Ph.D. Akira Otani\, EdD Mary Wells\, PhD\, LPC Tobi Goldfus\, LCSW-C\, BCD Ali Navidi\, PsyD (see website for bios)

SUMMARY:Conversing for a Change: The Principles and Practice of Conversational Hypnosis (Dr. David Alter)
DESCRIPTION:Organization: Dr. David Alter  \nWebsite: drdavidalter.com  \nEvent Title: Conversing for a Change: The Principles and Practice of Conversational Hypnosis  \nAgenda:  Conversing_for_a_Change_Webinar_Timing (1) \nDates: 02/20/2026 & 02/21/2026  \nLocation: Virtual  \nCE: 10  \nContact : Dr. David Alter\, drdavidalter@gmail.com  \nDescription: Gestures\, facial expressions\, uttered sounds\, formal words\, full sentences\, and the ideas they convey are all elements of language. Hypnosis utilizes language. However\, hypnosis is not reducible to language and words\, nor can it be optimally expressed through formulaic inductions and suggestions. In this ten-hour online course\, set to run on Friday and Saturday\, February 20 & 21\, 2026\, from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM CST each day\, participants will be exposed to an immersive\, expansive\, and clinically enriching experience as together we explore the underlying principles and practical applications of conversational hypnosis. The course highlights the neuropsychological underpinnings of language\, the utility of emergent potentials as innate client resources\, the role of narrative and evocative storytelling\, and the importance of uncertainty and disorientation as a core context for positive change. The course includes active Q&A time\, in-session demonstrations modeling and utilizing a slew of applied hypnotic practices that can be used in the course of dynamic\, relationally-based hypnotically-oriented conversations with clients.  \nLearning Objectives:   \n\nIdentify six dimensions of language and their relevance to cultivating increased client suggestibility. \nDefine and learn to utilize the eight neuropsychological underpinnings of dynamic and interpersonal conversation as foundations of client change promotion. \nContrast the legacy model of clinical hypnosis (induction\, deeping\, suggestion\, realerting\, and debriefing) with the seven core elements of conversational hypnosis model of interaction that the webinar will feature. \nModel a set of seven practical applications of conversational hypnotic interaction practices. \nPractice utilizing conversational prompts modeled in the webinar with scenarios drawn from participants’ clinical practices during the webinar’s practice sessions. \n\nSpeaker info: David S. SUMMARY:Indirect Work with Hypnosis Using Metaphorical Objects (CTSCH Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Organization: Central Texas Society of Clinical Hypnosis  \nWebsite: https://www.ctsch.com/calendar   \nEvent Title: Indirect Work with Hypnosis Using Metaphorical Objects (CTSCH Webinar)  \nAgenda:  Timed_Agenda (4) \nDates: 2/20/26\, 1-3pm CT \nLocation: Virtual – Webinar  \nCE: 2  \nContact : ctsch@ctsch.com  \nDescription: This presentation introduces Indirect Work with Hypnosis Using Metaphorical Objects as an experiential\, hypnosis-informed approach for facilitating therapeutic change in both individual and group settings. Rooted in Ericksonian principles\, this method utilizes metaphorical objects as concrete representations of unconscious information\, relational dynamics\, and emergent solutions\, allowing meaningful work to occur without the need for explicit verbal disclosure of the problem. Metaphorical objects function as indirect hypnotic stimuli that naturally evoke trance states\, activate internal resources\, and promote experiential reorganization. Drawing from Milton H. Erickson’s utilization-based hypnosis and Teresa Robles’ concept of universal wisdom\, the approach emphasizes safety\, respect\, and a non-invasive therapeutic stance. The therapist adopts an attitude of service and trust in the client’s inherent capacity for self-regulation and solution generation. The method is particularly useful in clinical contexts where clients prefer privacy\, minimal verbalization\, or indirect approaches. Through observation\, guided suggestions\, and metaphor-based interaction\, clients access new perceptions and embodied insights that support change at conscious and unconscious levels. A brief clinical illustration from a live demonstration highlights how metaphorical objects facilitate emotional regulation\, experiential learning\, and solution-focused transformation within a hypnotic framework.  \nLearning Objectives: After this program\, participants will be able to..  \n1. Identify the concept and clinical purpose of metaphorical objects within indirect\, Ericksonian hypnosis.  \n2. Describe the systemic and Ericksonian theoretical framework that supports therapeutic work with metaphorical objects.  \n3. Incorporate the use of at least two metaphorical objects as an indirect hypnotic technique. \n4. Formulate and practice at least three therapeutic verbalizations for effective clinical use of metaphorical objects  \nSpeaker info: Cecilia Fabre is a master in Ericksonian psychotherapy and systemic family therapy. She has been a clinical psychologist since 1988 and has a PhD in Integral and Conscious Development of Organizations and Groups. \nABOUT_THE_PRESENTER (1)

SUMMARY:Neurophysiology of Hypnosis (CHSNJ)
DESCRIPTION:Organization: Clinical Hypnosis Society of New Jersey (CHSNJ) \nWebsite: https://www.clinicalhypnosisnj.org/event-6444924   \nEvent Title: Neurophysiology of Hypnosis  \nAgenda:  _March_Timed_Agenda \nDate: 03/14/2026  \nLocation: Virtual  \nCE: 2  \nContact : ginnydinsmore@gmail.com\, Virginia Dinsmore (CHSNJ Secretary)   \nAbstract: Hypnosis is increasingly recognized as a powerful adjunct in clinical practice\, particularly in pain management\, oncology\, and anxiety disorders. Yet\, its underlying neural mechanisms have only recently begun to be elucidated through neuroimaging and electrophysiological studies. This presentation will summarize current evidence on how hypnosis modulates brain activity and connectivity across key networks involved in consciousness\, attention\, and pain processing. Findings show that hypnosis alters the balance between internal and external awareness networks\, disrupts activity within the Default Mode Network\, and engages regions such as the anterior cingulate and insular cortices that mediate emotional and sensory components of pain. Differences between highly and low hypnotizable individuals further highlight distinct attentional and inhibitory mechanisms that may influence clinical responsiveness. We will also review neurophysiological data supporting the use of hypnosis in acute and chronic pain\, oncology care\, phobias\, and functional neurological disorders. Finally\, emerging approaches combining hypnosis with virtual reality will be discussed as promising tools to enhance patient comfort and engagement in clinical settings. By linking neurophysiological mechanisms to clinical outcomes\, this talk aims to help clinicians better understand how hypnosis can be integrated into everyday care to optimize therapeutic efficacy and patient well-being.  \nLearning Objectives:   \n\nDescribe the key brain regions and neural networks involved in the hypnotic state\, as revealed by functional neuroimaging studies (fMRI\, EEG\, PET).  \n\n\nExplain how neuroimaging evidence links specific neurophysiological changes during hypnosis to its clinical benefits.  \n\n\nEvaluate the strengths and limitations of current neuroimaging approaches in distinguishing hypnotic responsiveness from other states of consciousness. \n\n Speaker info:  \nDr. Audrey Vanhaudenhuyse  _March_Clinical_Conversation_BIO_Vanhaudenhuyse__ \nDr. Mathieu Landry _March_Clinical_Conversation_BIOS_Landry \n

In this workshop\, participants will learn about the conceptual basis and theoretical foundations of mindful hypnotherapy and hypnotically oriented interventions in psychotherapy. Research on mindful hypnotherapy will be reviewed as well as applications. Mindful hypnotherapy will be considered in regard to stress and anxiety management. Hypnotherapy presents an intriguing synchronicity with some aspects of mindfulness\, in that both practices involve focused attention\, experiencing the world differently\, and relaxation. A combination of lecture\, case examples\, and experiential practice will be utilized to meet learning objectives in the workshop. \nAt the end of the program\, participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe at least 1 core concept related to mindful hypnotherapy\nDiscuss the relationship between mindfulness and hypnosis.\nIdentify 1 mindful hypnosis intervention from an eight-step mindful hypnotherapy protocol.\nDiscuss at least 1 hypnotic suggestion based upon mindful hypnotherapy concepts for anxiety and stress reduction.\nIdentify at least 1 advantage of mindful hypnotherapy versus mindfulness alone.\n\nPresenter: Gary Elkins\, Ph.D.\, professor of psychology and neuroscience\, directs the Mind-Body Medicine Research Laboratory at Baylor University where he conducts research into hypnosis for stress and mindfulness\, sleep\, trauma\, smoking cessation\, and hot flashes. Based upon his research and publications\, Dr. Elkins is the leading researcher and expert on hypnosis for hot flashes and sleep disturbances as well as other clinical applications. His research into hypnosis interventions has been funded by NIH grants for over 25 years. Dr. Elkins has over 100 publications which include the books: Mindful Hypnotherapy: The Basics for Clinical Practice; and the Handbook of Medical and Psychological Hypnosis. His latest book\, Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy: What you Need to Know provides a research evidence-based understanding of hypnotherapy. In recognition of his research\, Dr. Elkins has received major awards from the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis\, American Society for Clinical Hypnosis\, and the Distinguished Contribution to Science Award from Division 30 of the American Psychological Association. \nRegister here – Mindful Hypnotherapy: The Basics for Clinical Practice \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRonald A. Erickson’s therapeutic use of rapid and deep induction that integrated storytelling\, metaphors\, and deep trance to engage the patient’s unconscious mind towards healing was a pioneering contribution to this new paradigm of thought. Therefore\, within this new view\, affective experience has taken on an entirely new meaning\, one in which symptoms are now seen as the body’s wisdom pathways for creating communication between the unconscious and the self for promoting healing. \nFor 2500 years\, Buddhist meditation practices have developed what is referred to as “skillful methods” for the study and transformation of the mind-body process. These meditation and visualization practices help to cultivate self-regulation through awareness training to develop concentration\, release painful affects\, and apply the principles of Buddhist psychology to resolve afflictive factors of mind-body trauma. \nThis workshop will address solutions for treating trauma by utilizing Ericksonian Hypnosis\, Buddhist Mindfulness\, and Core Creativity. We will review the clinical skills of tracking\, pacing\, and utilization of the symptom as the pathway for accessing the creative unconscious with trance for the rapid treatment of trauma. The workshop will highlight Milton Erickson’s use of storytelling\, metaphor\, and rapid trance induction as well as the use of framing\, re-framing\, and de-framing for the immediate reorganization of transforming somatic-affective experience into new healing rhythms in the body. Through trance exercises\, participants will learn how to access their core creativity to help their clients visualize a path forward into the future after experiencing trauma. \nAt the conclusion of this program\, participants will be able to: \n\nDemonstrate more creative and resourceful skills when treating body symptoms\, trauma\, pain\, mood\, and somatic disorders.\nUtilize the symptom to access the unconscious and its healing inner resources with deep trance\, visualization\, and mindfulness meditation.\nApply experiential exercises to help clients integrate their body-mind and access their core creativity\, enabling them to move forward into the future after experiencing trauma.\nUtilize new clinical skills for tracking\, pacing\, and reframing trauma into new learnings for healing and resolution\n\nPresenter: Ronald A. Alexander\, PhD\, MFT\, SEP (Somatic Experiencing Practitioner) is a psychotherapist\, leadership coach\, and international trainer in the fields of Mindfulness Meditation\, Ericksonian Mind-Body Therapies\, Core Creativity\, Gestalt Therapy\, and Somatic Experiencing. He is the Executive Director of the OpenMind® Training Program\, which offers personal and professional training programs in mindfulness-based mind-body therapies\, transformational leadership\, and meditation.
