The workshop is designed as a unique in-person\, small-group learning opportunity. The syllabus is designed so that the CE hours may count as the Level 1 Basic training that is a required component towards ASCH certification in Clinical Hypnosis. This workshop follows the most up-to-date ASCH-ERF Standards of Training for a Level 1 workshop\, and proposes 21.5 hours of CE hours. The curriculum includes all didactic educational topics and experiential group practice exercises required by ASCH-ERF in a Level 1/Basic Clinical Hypnosis Workshop. We will define hypnosis\, offer a brief history of hypnosis\, and correct common misperceptions about the natural process of hypnosis and brain state of trance. An overview of the neuroscience of the trance state will be offered. Participants will be shown various demonstrations of the hypnotic process\, utilizing both audience volunteers and video recordings of work with actual clients. Each stage of the hypnotic process will be taught\, explored\, and practiced. The workshop includes 3 separate small group practice sessions (totaling 65 minutes practice time per student)\, with one practice session taking place on each of the workshop days. Special attention will be given to ethics\, treatment planning\, and integrating clinical hypnosis into clinical practice\, as these topics are especially relevant to mental health practitioners.  \nLearning Objectives:   \nFriday\, May 1st:  \n   \n\n ASCH Membership & Certification Process —15 minutes\n\nAt the conclusion of this module the participant will be able to:  \n\n Discuss ASCH’s clinical hypnosis standards of training\, levels of training\, and requirements for\, ASCH certification; and\n Describe the opportunities available for further training\,membershipand certification. \n\n   \n\n Introduction to Clinical Hypnosis (definitions\, brief history\, misconceptions) —30 minutes\n\nAt the conclusion of this module the participant will be able to:  \n\n Provide at least one commonly accepted definition of clinical hypnosis;\n Explain four hypnosis terms and how they apply to the clinical hypnosis experience; and\n Define two commonly held misperceptions concerning hypnosis and give an accurate rebuttal for each. \n\n   \n\n Neuroscience of Hypnosis—45 minutes\n\nAt the conclusion of this module the participant will be able to:  \n\n Describe how hypnosis affects the autonomic nervous system and the stress response; and\n Detail three implications of neurophysiological research on the practice of clinical hypnosis.\n\n   \n\n A View of a Hypnotic Experience —45 minutes\n\nAt the conclusion of this module the participant will be able to:  \n\n Describe the steps in a formal hypnotic encounter;\n Identify two characteristics of trance exhibited by the subject; and \n Define three changes the facilitator made during the reorientation phase of trance.\n\n   \n\n Group Hypnotic Experience —30 minutes\n\nAt the conclusion of this module the participant will be able to:  \n\n Experience clinical hypnosis and identify three aspects of their individual experience of trance. \n\n   \n\n Principles and Process of Rapport\, Attunement\, Elicitation\, Re-alerting and Reorientation —75 minutes\n\nAt the conclusion of this module the participant will be able to:  \n\n Describe three effective ways to build and reinforce rapport;\n Describe at least four observable physiological and four psychological/behavioral signs of trance;\n Discuss the importance of removing suggestions; and\n Identify how fractionation can be used to intensify trance.\n\n   \n\n Fundamentals of Hypnotic Communication —45 minutes\n\nAt the conclusion of this module the participant will be able to:  \n\n Explain at least two ways hypnotic communication creates positive expectancy;\n Discuss Erickson’s Principle of Individualization and Utilization as it pertains to language and suggestion; and\n Name at least four commonly used words/phrases to reinforce the patient’s hypnotic experience; and\n Differentiate between direct and indirect suggestion.\n\n   \n\n Hypnotic Phenomena —45 minutes\n\nAt the conclusion of this module the participant will be able to:  \n\n Explain five different hypnotic phenomena;\n Discuss and describe how the concept of trance logic and other hypnotic phenomena can be used therapeutically;\n List at least three principles of eliciting phenomenon; and\n Define abreaction and describe how it can be addressed therapeutically.\n\n   \n\n Ego Strengthening —45 minutes\n\nAt the conclusion of this module the participant will be able to:  \n\n Define what is meant by ego strengthening and how it might be used in clinical practice;\n Identify three different types of ego strengthening; The format will consist of two 3.5 hour online sessions and two 7.5 hour days in person.
