SUMMARY:Neurophysiology of Hypnosis (CHSNJ)
DESCRIPTION:Organization: Clinical Hypnosis Society of New Jersey (CHSNJ) \nWebsite: https://www.clinicalhypnosisnj.org/event-6444924   \nEvent Title: Neurophysiology of Hypnosis  \nAgenda:  _March_Timed_Agenda \nDate: 03/14/2026  \nLocation: Virtual  \nCE: 2  \nContact : ginnydinsmore@gmail.com\, Virginia Dinsmore (CHSNJ Secretary)   \nAbstract: Hypnosis is increasingly recognized as a powerful adjunct in clinical practice\, particularly in pain management\, oncology\, and anxiety disorders. Yet\, its underlying neural mechanisms have only recently begun to be elucidated through neuroimaging and electrophysiological studies. This presentation will summarize current evidence on how hypnosis modulates brain activity and connectivity across key networks involved in consciousness\, attention\, and pain processing. Findings show that hypnosis alters the balance between internal and external awareness networks\, disrupts activity within the Default Mode Network\, and engages regions such as the anterior cingulate and insular cortices that mediate emotional and sensory components of pain. Differences between highly and low hypnotizable individuals further highlight distinct attentional and inhibitory mechanisms that may influence clinical responsiveness. We will also review neurophysiological data supporting the use of hypnosis in acute and chronic pain\, oncology care\, phobias\, and functional neurological disorders. Finally\, emerging approaches combining hypnosis with virtual reality will be discussed as promising tools to enhance patient comfort and engagement in clinical settings. By linking neurophysiological mechanisms to clinical outcomes\, this talk aims to help clinicians better understand how hypnosis can be integrated into everyday care to optimize therapeutic efficacy and patient well-being.  \nLearning Objectives:   \n\nDescribe the key brain regions and neural networks involved in the hypnotic state\, as revealed by functional neuroimaging studies (fMRI\, EEG\, PET).  \n\n\nExplain how neuroimaging evidence links specific neurophysiological changes during hypnosis to its clinical benefits.  \n\n\nEvaluate the strengths and limitations of current neuroimaging approaches in distinguishing hypnotic responsiveness from other states of consciousness. \n\n Speaker info:  \nDr. Audrey Vanhaudenhuyse  _March_Clinical_Conversation_BIO_Vanhaudenhuyse__ \nDr. Mathieu Landry _March_Clinical_Conversation_BIOS_Landry \n

SUMMARY:Indirect Work with Hypnosis Using Metaphorical Objects (CTSCH Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Organization: Central Texas Society of Clinical Hypnosis  \nWebsite: https://www.ctsch.com/calendar   \nEvent Title: Indirect Work with Hypnosis Using Metaphorical Objects (CTSCH Webinar)  \nAgenda:  Timed_Agenda (4) \nDates: 2/20/26\, 1-3pm CT \nLocation: Virtual – Webinar  \nCE: 2  \nContact : ctsch@ctsch.com  \nDescription: This presentation introduces Indirect Work with Hypnosis Using Metaphorical Objects as an experiential\, hypnosis-informed approach for facilitating therapeutic change in both individual and group settings. Rooted in Ericksonian principles\, this method utilizes metaphorical objects as concrete representations of unconscious information\, relational dynamics\, and emergent solutions\, allowing meaningful work to occur without the need for explicit verbal disclosure of the problem. Metaphorical objects function as indirect hypnotic stimuli that naturally evoke trance states\, activate internal resources\, and promote experiential reorganization. Drawing from Milton H. Erickson’s utilization-based hypnosis and Teresa Robles’ concept of universal wisdom\, the approach emphasizes safety\, respect\, and a non-invasive therapeutic stance. The therapist adopts an attitude of service and trust in the client’s inherent capacity for self-regulation and solution generation. The method is particularly useful in clinical contexts where clients prefer privacy\, minimal verbalization\, or indirect approaches. Through observation\, guided suggestions\, and metaphor-based interaction\, clients access new perceptions and embodied insights that support change at conscious and unconscious levels. A brief clinical illustration from a live demonstration highlights how metaphorical objects facilitate emotional regulation\, experiential learning\, and solution-focused transformation within a hypnotic framework.  \nLearning Objectives: After this program\, participants will be able to..  \n1. Identify the concept and clinical purpose of metaphorical objects within indirect\, Ericksonian hypnosis.  \n2. Describe the systemic and Ericksonian theoretical framework that supports therapeutic work with metaphorical objects.  \n3. Incorporate the use of at least two metaphorical objects as an indirect hypnotic technique. \n4. Formulate and practice at least three therapeutic verbalizations for effective clinical use of metaphorical objects  \nSpeaker info: Cecilia Fabre is a master in Ericksonian psychotherapy and systemic family therapy. She has been a clinical psychologist since 1988 and has a PhD in Integral and Conscious Development of Organizations and Groups. \nABOUT_THE_PRESENTER (1)

SUMMARY:Facilitating Insight and Healing Through Client-Generated Clean Metaphor (NTSCH)
DESCRIPTION:Organization: North Texas Society of Clinical Hypnosis (NTSCH) \nWebsite: https://www.northtexashypnosis.org/   \nEvent Title: Facilitating Insight and Healing Through Client-Generated Clean Metaphor  \nDates: 01/28/2026\, 6-7:30pm CT \nLocation: Virtual  \nCE: 2  \nContact : Tracy Payton Watson\, LPC  \nDescription: This presentation explores David Grove’s Clean Language Method\, a client-centered approach to psychotherapy that uses precise\, non-directive questioning to facilitate insight and healing through metaphor. Participants will learn how Clean Language preserves client autonomy by minimizing therapist assumptions\, interpretations\, and influence\, allowing clients’ own words and metaphors to guide therapeutic change. The session will outline the core principles of Clean Language\, including the therapist’s stance of curiosity and “notknowing\,” the role of metaphor as an organizing system of experience\, and the standardized question sets used to elicit and track client-generated metaphors. Clinical applications for trauma\, anxiety\, depression\, addiction\, chronic pain\, and somatic experiences will be discussed\, along with ethical considerations for preserving client agency and supporting trauma-informed care. Through illustrative transcripts\, case examples\, and interactive reflection\, participants will gain practical skills for integrating Clean Language into clinical practice. This CE session aligns with best practices for experiential and metaphorical therapy\, emphasizing client-led insight and emergent healing.  \nLearning Objectives:  \n1. Describe and compare Milton Erickson’s use of therapist-generated metaphor\, indirect suggestion\, and utilization with David Grove’s client-generated metaphor approach in facilitating insight and therapeutic change.   \n2. Identify at least three key distinctions in how insight and healing are conceptualized and achieved through Erickson’s strategic\, directive use of metaphor versus Grove’s nondirective Symbolic Modeling process. \n3. Apply ethical and clinical decision-making principles to determine when Ericksonian metaphor interventions or Grove’s client-led metaphor tracking are most appropriate for supporting insight and healing across diverse client presentations.  \nSpeaker info: Tracy Payton Watson\, LPC CV_8.4.23_Tracy \n

SUMMARY:Hypnotically Informed Psychotherapy (CHSNJ)
DESCRIPTION:Organization: Clinical Hypnosis Society of New Jersey  \nWebsite: https://www.clinicalhypnosisnj.org/events  \nEvent Title:  Hypnotically Informed Psychotherapy\, Advanced Workshop  \nAgenda: HIP_timed_agenda \nDates: 1/10/26\, 10am – 1pm ET \nLocation: Virtual  \nCE: 3  \nContact : Robert Staffin\, drstaffin@gmail.com  \nAbstract: Whether you have a background in hypnosis or are simply curious\, this course will provide a brief overview of hypnosis and then offer examples of how the principles that underlie the processes of hypnosis can be woven into one’s clinical practice regardless of one’s theoretical orientation.    \n  Hypnosis has a rich academic and clinical history. The clinician who understands the underpinnings of hypnosis\, e.g.\, how to fixate attention\, depotentiate conscious sets\, and cultivate unconscious searches\, is better able to identify\, elicit\, and utilize these naturally occurring “states” to make their clinical work more impactful.    \n  Much of what skilled clinicians do can be viewed through a hypnotic lens. This program will highlight how what you are likely doing already can be done with greater strategic and mindful intent.  \nLearning Objectives: At the conclusion of this program\, participants will be able to: \n1. List the six core competencies of Ericksonian therapy. \n2. Outline the 5 microdynamic steps of trance elicitation described by Erickson\,\n     Rossi\, and Rossi\, (1976) \n3. Define the concept of “influence ” as it is used in the social psychocology     \n     literature.  \n Speaker info: Rob Staffin\, PsyD\, ABPH is a clinical psychologist who is licensed in New Jersey and New York. He is also authorized to practice interjurisdictional psychology via telehealth by the PSYPACT Commission. Dr. Staffin received his doctorate from Yeshiva University’s Ferkauf graduate school of psychology in 1990.  He studied infant social development with Dr. Beatrice Beebe. Rob has been studying\, teaching\, and writing about hypnosis for more than 20 years.  He is an Approved Consultant of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) and a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychological Hypnosis.  Rob is the President of the Clinical Hypnosis Society of New Jersey (CHSNJ)\, a component section of ASCH.  He is the author of\, More Common Therapy: the experiential psychotherapy of Jeffrey K. Zeig\, Ph.D.  He characterizes the book as an advanced how to guide for clinicians interested in cultivating their skills in clinical hypnosis.  His most recent article\, Hypnotically Informed Psychotherapy: Erickson and Beyond\, is published online ahead of print in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. Rob maintains a private practice in Teaneck\, NJ where provides individual therapy and offers individual and group consultation both in person and remotely.  \n

The presenter will provide theoretical background and clinical demonstration for using hypnosis with both types of pain. Hypnosis for crisis involves very rapid\, direct inductions. For procedural pain\, patients undergo a hypnotic session well before the medical procedure (e.g.\, surgery\, dentistry\, childbirth\, burn care). The procedural hypnotical induction makes use of priming\, confusion\, amnesia\, and post-hypnotic suggestion. The presenter will describe each of these hypnotic techniques and then demonstrate them.  \nThis is a Clinical Conversation – one in a series; Appropriate for beginners – advanced. \nLearning Objectives: At the conclusion of this workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe the difference between treating acute and chronic pain \n\n\nList and utilize one quick hypnotic induction for patients in crisis \n\n\nList and utilize one induction for procedural pain \n\n\nDescribe how principles of priming\, confusion\, and amnesia can be integrated into a hypnotic intervention for procedural pain \n\nSpeaker info: David R. SUMMARY:Enhancing Hope through Strategic Hypnotic Suggestion (MSCH)
DESCRIPTION:Organization: Minnesota Society of Clinical Hypnosis MSCH  \nWebsite: https://www.msch.us/education/2025-rosenthal-retreat/  \nEvent Title:  Enhancing Hope through Strategic Hypnotic Suggestion  \nAgenda:   \nDates: 11/22/2025  \nLocation: Virtual  \nCE: 6   \nContact : deb@msch.us — Deb Schrobilgen  \nAbstract: Workshop is designed to enhance the participants’ understanding of the nature of suffering and grief in the face of persistent physical and/or psychological distress\, and employ skillful hypnotic strategies to foster hopeful expectancy. The nature of ongoing symptoms and distress often result in a ‘negative set’ that of itself impairs the ability to fully engage in therapy and limits hope for lasting improvement. We will explore the model of pain\, discuss the nervous system’s response to ongoing distress\, and offer a model for hypnotic suggestion to strategically alter perception and meaning-making involved in this process. Specific methodologies to ‘deconstruct’ the negative mental set that commonly accompanies chronic and intractable symptoms such as pain\, anxiety\, and depression will be discussed\, including specific hypnotic approaches to challenge negative self-talk\, to interrupt negative loops in thinking or feeling states\, and to offer greater distance from or qualitative awareness of such perception. This stepped approach enhances self-efficacy and offers opportunities to significantly improve one’s mental set\, which can enhance therapeutic progress and foster a more hopeful and engaged patient in the healing process.  \nLearning Objectives: By the end of this course\, participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe the difference between acute\, chronic\, and intractable\nDescribe critical components of a biopsychosocial assessment approach to chronic pain and illness\nIdentify hypnotic approaches for chronic pain that provide strategic support for hope when cure is no longer thought to be possible\nDescribe four hypnotic approaches to strategically reinforce and/or redefine hope while also addressing chronic symptoms and illness\nDescribe the current concepts of the unconscious that apply directly to hypnosis in order to facilitate the making of meaning in order to lessen suffering \n\nSpeaker info: DAN HANDEL\, MD Dan_Handel__MD_Bio

SUMMARY:Adaptive Experiential Theory of Hypnosis: A Resource for Clinicians (CTSCH)
DESCRIPTION:Organization: Central Texas Society of Clinical Hypnosis  \nWebsite: https://www.ctsch.com/   \nEvent Title:  Adaptive Experiential Theory of Hypnosis: A Resource for Clinicians\, Advanced Workshop  \nAgenda:  Timed_Agend1 \nDates: 11/21/2025 \, 1-3pm CT \nLocation: Virtual  \nCE: 2  \nContact : Jana Jung-Woelfl\, ctsch@ctsch.com  \nAbstract: This presentation will explore a recently proposed theory of hypnosis called the adaptive experiential theory. This new theory is a dual-process model that provides a comprehensive understanding of the rational system and the experiential system. While these two systems work together in synergy\, they function quite differently in terms of their characteristics and methods. The rational system is influenced by logic and reason\, demands significant cognitive resources\, and operates with concentrated effort. On the other hand\, the experiential system is powered by emotions\, relies on associations\, and encodes reality through images and feelings effortlessly. According to the adaptive experiential theory\, the ability to engage in complex hypnotic responses can be attributed to an individual’s capacity to adaptively shift from processing predominantly via rational system to the experiential system. Having a stronger association with the experiential system leads to changes in how reality is processed\, enabling hypnotic suggestions to be internalized\, reified\, and put into action with less interference from the rational system. This presentation will focus on the implications this theory has for the clinical use of hypnosis emphasizing the idea that content and language of hypnotic suggestions matter.  \nLearning Objectives:  \n\n Identify and describe the rational system and the experiential system and describe at least three core differences between the two systems.\n2. Describe how the rational system and experiential system are related to hypnosis and hypnotic phenomena. \n3.Demonstrate the ability to generate hypnotic suggestions according to whether they are rational-system-oriented or experiential-system-oriented. \n4. Describe how accessing and working with the experiential system via hypnosis in therapy can be applied to various presenting concerns. \n\nSpeaker info: Cameron Alldredge\, PhD : Alldredge_CV_2025

SUMMARY:The Use of Ventral Vagal Tone Enhancement Exercises to Facilitate Clinical Hypnosis (5 Simple Practices to Increase Inner Safety and Calmness) (NESCH)
DESCRIPTION:Organization: New England Society of Clinical Hypnosis  \nWebsite: http://www.nesch.org/   \nEvent Title:  The Use of Ventral Vagal Tone Enhancement Exercises to Facilitate Clinical Hypnosis (5 Simple Practices to Increase Inner Safety and Calmness)  \nAgenda:  NESCH_Quarterly_11-16-25_Objectives__Schedule__Articles.docx \nDates: 11/16/25 10am –1:10pm EST  \nLocation: Virtual  \nCE: 3.0  \nContact : neschmsc@gmail.com – Staisha Stephens-Brown  \nAbstract: Clinical Hypnosis is a wonderful tool to enhance almost any interaction between human beings and is particularly useful in helping practitioners to alleviate physical\, mental\, emotional\, spiritual\, and social suffering. At this time\, in which the social/political context-both in our country and in the world-is so chaotic\, fearful\, divisive\, and intense\, the contextual stress can intensify the suffering that individual patients/clients have from their specific issues. Exercises that enhance ventral vagal nervous system tone can biologically\, quickly lower the intensity of stress a person is experiencing\, and can allow easier utilization of Clinical Hypnosis techniques for healing specific personal issues. In this 3-hour workshop\, attendees will learn five simple exercises to increase ventral vagal tone\, each with immediate effects on enhancing calmness and inner safety and enabling the utilization of and effects of Clinical Hypnosis.  \nLearning Objectives: (appropriate for all levels)  \n\n Identify the key components of the Autonomic Nervous System \nDescribe the Polyvagal Theory \nDemonstrate five exercises designed to enhance ventral vagal tone \nApply Ventral Vagal Exercises to specific clients/patients to enhance Clinical Hypnosis sessions. \n\nSpeaker info: Harvey Zarren\, MD\, ABPP — HZ_CV

Describe how the “language” clinicians employ aligns with the microdynamics     of trance induction and the core competencies   \n Speaker: Robert Staffin\, PsyD\, ABPH _5_-_Staffin_ResumeRS2025

SUMMARY:Planning Treatment Using Clinical Hypnosis: Practical Applications for Common and Not so Common Conditions (Greater Philadelphia Society of Clinical Hypnosis)
DESCRIPTION:Organization: Greater Philadelphia Society of Clinical Hypnosis  \nWebsite: https://gpsch.org/  \nEvent Title:  Planning Treatment Using Clinical Hypnosis: Practical Applications for Common and Not so Common Conditions\, Advanced Workshop \nAgenda:  Reid_Timed_Agenda \nDates: September 21\, 2025  \nLocation: Virtual \nCE: 3 \nContact: Marcy Nadel\, marcy1116@aol.com  \nAbstract: Clinical hypnosis\, whether facilitated by another or self-directed (i.e.\, self-hypnosis)\, has been shown to be an effective (and evidence-based) means of enhancing pain management (Thompson et al\, 2019; Milling et al.\, 2020)\, panic and anxiety (Valentine et al.\, 2019; Reid\, 2023) phagophobia (Reid\, 2016) smoking cessation (Green & Lynn\, 2018)\, and depression (Milling et al.\, 2019). As clinicians we can evoke therapeutic\, conscious and unconscious resources for our clients in many ways\, though in this workshop we will explore the practical and intentional application of clinical hypnosis for evoking client resources. \nThis webinar involves skill building and enhancement of clinical hypnosis knowledge and will provide attendees with opportunities to discuss and formulate hypnosis treatment plans\, as well as implement hypnotic interventions (e.g.\, age regression\, age progression\, alert trance\, posthypnotic suggestions) for the treatment of common (e.g.\, depression\, anxiety\, habit control) and not so common (e.g.\, phagophobia\, trichotillomania\, trypanophobia\, hemophobia) troubling and sometimes debilitating human conditions. Attendees will be encouraged to submit and discuss their own sanitized cases pending review and approval of Dr. Reid (see below for instructions). The ethical implications of treatment planning and issues involving informed consent for treatment when using hypnosis will be also addressed. Furthermore\, this webinar\, through the use of practical demonstrations\, will minimize the apparent gap that exists for many clinicians who lack knowledge\, understanding\, and strategic application of clinical hypnosis interventions.  \nLearning Objectives:   \nAt the end of the program\, participants will be able to:  \n\nDevelop a treatment plan including hypnosis interventions for patients presenting with numerous personal challenges. Participants will complete a hypnosis treatment plan for at least three case studies that will be provided by the instructor (Reid\, D.B.\, 2016) \n\n\nConstruct three metaphors appropriate for treatment of anxiety\, depression\, and panic disorder (one metaphor for each condition) (Casula\, C.C.\, 2022; Casula\, C.C.\, 2025; Reid\, D.B.\, 2023) \n\n\nConstruct three posthypnotic suggestions for two case studies provided by the instructor or an attendee (Willmarth\, E.K. & Vinson\, M.\, 2022; Wark\, D.M.\, 2023) d.  Describe alert hypnosis including the “Helping Hands” intervention for treatment of unhealthy and unwanted habits (Reid\, D.B.\, 2025; Feldman\, J.B.\, 2020)

Unfortunately\, current research and knowledge on Autism—and the diverse ways it manifests—has not trickled down to all helping professionals. Many clinicians may be relying on outdated information on Autism and feel ill-equipped to recognize and adapt therapy for Autistic clients—particularly those with “subtle” presentations. This neuro-affirming training is designed to bridge this gap by providing updated information about less-obvious Autism as well as practical tools and insights to help therapists support the emotional\, relational and processing needs of Autistic individuals. \nLearning Objectives: \n1. Identify at least 4 features of Autism. \n2. Describe at least 3 core characteristics of Autism that are most relevant for psychotherapy. \n3. List at least 4 interventions to support processing and emotional differences in Autistic clients. \n4. Such Complex Traumatic Stress Disorders include disturbances of self-organization that overlap with attachment deficits and pathologies requiring specialized interventions to modify. Prolonged neglect and abuse are associated with attachment anomalies\, strong egosyntonic negative beliefs\, and dissociation that are not readily changed with CBT or cognitive hypnotic interventions. These underlying aspects of developmental trauma involve the implicit memory system and early learning that psychoanalysts call the unrepressed unconscious.  This workshop will delineate the role of implicit memory in trauma-related disorders and address strategies for modifying implicit memories not accessible through cognitive methods (Normative Implicit Clinical Hypnosis). Hypnotic and biobehavioral techniques for polyvagal-based interventions\, attachment repair\, and memory reconsolidation update will be integrated into a phase-oriented treatment model.  Participants will learn how to establish the neurophysiological substrate for neuroception of safety and equip patients with the prerequisite skills necessary for mastery of traumatic and wounding experiences.  Application of exploratory techniques combined with memory reconsolidation update strategies to modify negative egosyntonic beliefs and transform traumatic memories will be delineated. Once adequate stabilization is attained and sufficient memory integration is established\, treatment can focus on self-development. The workshop will provide sufficient information for participants new to the advanced hypnosis workshops and more senior practitioners looking for specialized training in trauma\, complex trauma\, and attachment disorder applications.      \nLearning Objectives: See attached agenda
