Advanced Workshop
Utilizing Hypnosis to Improve and Enhance Performance

ASCH CE/CME: 20 Hours

Abstract: If a picture is worth a thousand words, then an experience is worth a thousand pictures.  This workshop will set the stage for participants to experience their work as a performance. Through a combination of didactic and experiential learning, they will understand and experience how “being hypnotic” enhances performance.  Whether it is recovering from the pandemic, improving athletic, artistic, professional, or personal skills, or moving through a process of change, participants will leave the program with a toolbox of ideas, skills, and actions to enhance their own as well as their clients’ performance -- and in the process – to boost mental health.

Rarely does a day go by without a renowned public figure coming forward in the news and social media to reveal the impact of mental health on their performance. Stories and research abound on how mental health concerns have contributed to performance setbacks in the lives of elite athletes (U.S. Olympic Committee, 2019,) performing artists ((Rusak, et al., 2021), students (Agnafors, et al., 2020), and employees in the workplace (Center for Disease Control, 2018). As the connection between mental health and performance continues to receive greater recognition and acceptance and less of a stigma on a global scale, the opportunity for clinicians who can use hypnosis (vs. psychopharmacological approaches) to help improve and enhance both performance and mental health is growing.

This workshop will provide for participants the opportunity to experience several hypnotically informed strategies to draw out the best performance in their clients, and in the process, address mental health concerns such as performance-related anxiety and depression.

In addition, participants who come to this advanced workshop seeking to build their professional skills might agree that their clinical practice, itself, is a performance (S. Miller, 2021) This workshop will employ the 6 core competencies of “Ericksonian” therapy as a foundation for improvement. The core competencies - Tailoring, Utilization, Strategic, Destabilization, Experiential, and Naturalistic (Short, 2017) will be explored in the context of being hypnotic and enhancing performance.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will describe three key components of a process-oriented approach to performance enhancement.
  2. Participants will describe and apply a powerful approach to performance enhancement that utilizes selected performance management tools and techniques from the field of organizational psychology and integrates them with clinical hypnosis.
  3. Participants will describe at least three experiential exercises they can apply with teams and individuals in the process of performance enhancement.
  4. Participants will be able to explain the difference between “doing hypnosis” and “being hypnotic.”
  5. Participants will be able to define the 6 core competencies of Ericksonian Therapy.
  6. Participants will be able to demonstrate the process of reverse engineering from a goal state utilizing resources identified by their clients or themselves.
  7. Utilization is an essential component of any performance-enhancing tool or relationship. Participants will be able to define the concept of utilization and identify 3 domains available for utilization.

Speakers:

ASCH Headshot Robert Staffin

Presenter: Rob Staffin, PsyD, ABPH

Dr. Staffin brings his career-long fascination with communication to the workshop.  Appreciating that it is often more about how we say it rather than what we say, his focus is on “being hypnotic.”  Borrowing from Social Psychology and hypnosis research, Rob will present structures of communication, verbal, nonverbal, and paraverbal, that can be utilized to make participants’ own work and performance more impactful.

ASCH Headshot Dana Lebo

Dana Lebo, Ph.D.

Dr. Lebo has focused the past two decades of her career on performance and executive coaching and has helped hundreds of leaders, elite athletes, teams, writers, students, and individuals in diverse fields to achieve their optimal levels of functioning while also addressing the challenges to their mental health along the way. She will combine organizational/business, coaching, and sports psychologies and research with hypnosis in ways to improve performance and guide participants through performance enhancement processes they can readily apply in their work.
