• Note each workshop is held over the entirety of the four days. Participants must register for EITHER Level 2 or Advanced. Register for only ONE workshop.
• Registration does not include transportation, parking, hotel, or meals.
• Detailed workshop schedules, faculty and other materials will be available to participants, online, two weeks before the start date.  Workshop materials will be available in electronic form only.
• Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop or notepad to access workshop material. Connection to WiFi and access to power strips will be available in the classroom. The event hotel is located 30 miles north of O'Hare International Airport.

Clinical Workshop Level 2
What are the advantages of more training in Clinical Hypnosis?  

The second step in certification training is to strengthen skills, strategies, and applications of clinical hypnosis. Part one taught “how to” do clinical hypnosis, and part two builds on this skill set and refines and furthers development to add the when, why, and where to the “how-to”.

Advantages:

• Introduction to a wider range of topics on the utility of clinical hypnosis (e.g., Pain Management; Anxiety and Sleep Disorders; Habit Disorders).
• Learn more techniques for the creative use of the language of suggestion to facilitate change.
• Learn specific tools (complex inductions and intensification techniques) for specific populations (children).
• More practice with the feedback of expert faculty.

This workshop expands the participants' skill set and builds greater confidence in the use of hypnosis. It prepares the participant to move on to Advanced (Skills) Workshops and Individual Consultation to build a greater understanding of principles and advance one’s skill level.

Advanced Workshop

Hypnosis and Zen Buddhism for Pain and Suffering

This 18-hour workshop will focus on hypnosis and a mindfulness intervention based on Zen Buddhism as intervention to manage pain and suffering. Much of this will be based on the presenters APA publication Hypnosis for Pain Control that will come out in a largely new form as a second edition in 2024. The workshop will cycle through lectures on theory, demonstrations and then practice in brief exercises in dyad form. The presenter uses a technique to teach hypnotic inductions in which they are broken down into a chain of concepts, and practiced, before entire inductions are presented.

We will cover the psychology of chronic pain and suffering, brief and rapid inductions to control acute pains, complex/nonlinear inductions based on Erickson and Motivational Interviewing approaches, and finally a technique to integrate hypnosis and mindfulness based on the neurophysiology of consciousness. The theory and intervention will be based on current science throughout the workshop.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the psychological and neurological factors inherent in pain processing.
2. Perform a quick direct hypnotic induction that can be used for acute pain in the ER and other emergency medical situations.
3. Articulate the theory that is involved in the components of complex, non-linear inductions.
4. Do an assessment of a patient with chronic pain that leads to hypnotic and other psychological interventions.
5. Articulate the difference between acute and chronic pain and the severe limitations of the concept of “hypnotherapy”.
6. Describe the neurophysiology of consciousness and how this can be used to teach patients a mindfulness intervention for suffering.

Modules:

1. (2-Hours) Didactic pain on psychological approaches to pain, the neurophysiology of pain and biopsychosocial assessment of pain.
2. (2-Hours) Brief induction for acute pain that is hands on and direct (less than 15 minutes). Demonstration and practice of concepts.
3. (2-Hours) Using science, Ericksonian techniques, and motivational interviewing to construct complex, non-linear inductions.
4. (4-Hours) Exercise in which a patient in pain is assessed and the group comes up with a formulation for treatment.
5. (4-Hours) Group practice of non-linear inductions that are intended to create growth and insight in the participants.
6. (2-Hours) Neurophysiology of consciousness, meditation, psychedelics, and hypnosis.
7. Question and answer and discussion.

Pre-requisites: Completion of Level 1 and Level 2 Clinical Hypnosis Workshops 

Biography:

David Patterson, Ph.D., is professor emeritus of psychology in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He is the author of over 150 peer reviewed articles relevant to pain management and hypnosis and he is senior author on publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, Psychological Bulletin (2), Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Journal of Abnormal Psychology as well as IJCEH.

His recent work with Mark Jensen has been published in The American Psychologist and Pain. The second edition of his APA book on Clinical Hypnosis for Pain Control will be published in 2024. He was the lead psychologist at a trauma center for almost three decades and began APA internship and postdoctoral training programs for dozens of students. Finally, he has taught workshops in over a dozen countries and loves teaching in three day sessions.

Typical Workshop Schedule: 

In-Person: Workshops typically begin Thursday at 6:30 pm (local time) and end on Sunday at 12:00 pm (local time).  Expect a full day of sessions on Friday and Saturday beginning around 8:30-9:00 am local time and ending before 7:00 pm.

Registration Instructions:

On-line registration will take you to the new ASCH site and require a new account set-up (non-members) or Member login.  If you are an ASCH member enter the email address associated with your ASCH Membership as our UserID; click Forgot Password to set a new password. 

Payments can now be made in a secure online environment.  The system DOES NOT save credit card information once the transaction has been completed and registration submitted.    

General Information:

Workshop Material. Approximately one week before the workshop, registered participants will receive a link to a private webpage that will include links to handouts and resource materials.  This access will be good for seven days after the workshop has been completed.  Note: workshop handouts can be approximately 100 pages for Level 2 and 100+ pages for Advanced. Participants are responsible for downloading and printing workshop materials. 

Continuing Education Hours. On-time attendance, full engagement, and completion of the daily program evaluations are required for a Certificate of Completion. The workshop is approved for 20.0 -  21.5 hrs.   

Changing Dates. ASCH will honor one registration transfer.  Transfer requests must be made in writing, to education@asch.net, by Thursday, September 28.  Changes requested after that date will be will be treated as a cancellation.

Credit Card Payments. Registration payments must be made online and received by September 28.  The ASCH Registrar will send reminders of the due date will in advance.  The Registrants seat will be relinquished if payment is not received by this date.

Cancellations. Cancellations must be made in writing to education@asch.net. No cancellations will be taken by phone. Cancellations made by September 28 will receive a full refund minus a $50 administrative fee. No refunds will be made for cancellations made after that date unless the seat can be filled by a waitlisted person.

Clinical Workshop Eligibility

Registrants must hold a master's degree or higher in a health care discipline deemed appropriate by the Society from a college or university accredited by its appropriate regional accrediting body. In addition, registrants must be licensed or certified in the state in which they practice.

Registered Nurses with a bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by its appropriate regional accrediting body who are licensed or certified in the state in which they practice are eligible to attend the Level 1 Workshop on Clinical Hypnosis.

Students enrolled full-time in master's level or higher programs are eligible to attend at a reduced rate. Students must have completed a minimum of one full semester of the program and must submit proof of full-time enrollment at an ACE-approved institution of higher education on school letterhead that clearly identifies the individual’s program of study, area of concentration (if applicable), level of degree pursued and date of intended graduation.

Full-time residents or interns participating in a recognized residency or internship program may also register to attend at a reduced rate. Residents/interns need to submit correspondence from their supervisor on official letterhead explaining the nature of the residency/internship and the date of intended completion of the program.

Workshop CME & ASCH Continuing Education (CE) Credits

The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis-Education and Research Foundation (ASCH-ERF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis-Education and Research Foundation (ASCH-ERF) designates this live activity for a maximum of 21.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

ASCH-ERF is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. ASCH-ERF maintains responsibility for the regional workshops. The ASCH Standards of Training Committee has approved all regional workshops as meeting the twenty hours required for membership and certification requirements.

Courses approved by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis are approved continuing education courses per Florida's AC-Rule 64B-4-6002 for Social Workers, Counselors, and Marriage and Family Therapists in the State of Florida.

Please note that effective July 1, 2015, the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (CBBS) is no longer renewing existing CE provider numbers.  ASCH-ERF’s accreditation through CBBS expired on December 31, 2015.  BBS licensees now obtain their continuing education through the National Association of Social Workers and the American Psychological Association, among others, both through which ASCH-ERF maintains accreditation.
