Advanced Workshop
Use of Suggestions as a Clinical Tool in Managing Acute, Chronic, and Procedural Pain

Hypnosis lends itself particularly well to chronic pain care as an adjunctive tool for the management of difficult symptoms, enhancing responses to intended interventions, promoting relaxation, and improved sleep. This session will focus on the brief and proven use of therapeutic suggestion deployed in a stepped approach within the context of the ‘medical visit’ to build responsivity and confidence over time. Video and live demonstrations of advanced hypnotic techniques will illustrate the principles of hypnotic analgesia, and small group practices will increase the skill-building of these techniques. This material will be presented in a case-based context, and issues regarding practicality, the utility for specific clinical problems, and modification of approach based on patient response. The use of scientific literature regarding this modality will be emphasized.

The participant will:

  1. be able to use tactical for acute and procedural pain management suggestions which are tailored to setting and patient characteristics.
  2. be able to tailor the hypnotic approach to chronic pain settings, while utilizing patient responses to maximize responsiveness to suggestions.
  3. Improve skillful and confident symptom management through the strategic deployment of hypnotic interventions in difficult clinical situations.
