INTRODUCTION
The HYPNOSIS List is an Internet discussion forum co-sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH), the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (SCEH), and the International Society of Hypnosis (ISH) for qualified hypnosis professionals. HYPNOSIS is a non-moderated discussion list about hypnosis and hypnotic treatments. It is intended for faculty members and licensed professionals who are involved in the study and use of hypnosis, such as physicians, dentists, chiropractors, psychologists, social workers, nurses, counselors as well as graduate students in those disciplines. The site is hosted by the Information Center for Online Resources and Services, Inc. (ICORS), which is a non-profit hosting organization that developed in response to the termination of free hosting services by St. John's University in 2006.
Appropriate topics for discussion involve any aspect of the principles and practices of hypnosis including:
* Theoretical questions, perspectives, ideas, etc.
* Ethical questions
* Relationships between hypnosis and other approaches
* Research questions and protocols
* Application to clinical cases, supervision questions, etc.
(Note that confidentiality must be preserved!)
* Technical issues related to the practice and research of hypnosis
* Comments or questions about the hypnosis literature
* Legislative issues
* Training issues and events
* Hypnosis literature
* And more...
INTERACTING WITH THE ADMINISTRATIVE SERVER
There are two ways to interact with the HYPNOSIS List administrativeserver: a web interface via your browser, and the use of commands via email messages.
Click here to access the browser-based subscription management page. The major benefit of using this page is that you see all the options in front of you, such as the choices for mail delivery (regular messages or digest), header types, the form of acknowledgment received when posting a message, and miscellaneous options (suspending mail for a temporary period, concealing your address in the full membership list). You will be asked to login or create a password. This will be a new password of your own, not one connected with another site such as your ASCH member password. We urge you to become familiar with the subscription management page.
The benfit of using simple email message commands is their expediency (click here for an example). The instructions below reference both types of settings control.
Personally, I recommend the use of the web page interface. Once you are subscribed, click here for more information about obtaining a password to access your account settings via the the web interface.
TROUBLESHOOTING
If you have problems receiving messages from the HYPNOSIS List after you receive subscription notification, please contact George Glaser, MSW or Carol B. Low, Psy.D. for assistance. Eric Willmarth, Ph.D. and Steve Kahn, Ph.D. also serve as list administrators. Make sure that mail from hypnosis@listserv.icors.org is considered acceptable by entering that address in your Address Book or list of Contacts. Different emails systems and computer types use a variety of methods to achieve this so-called "whitelisting", so check the instructions for your specific system. If you cannot find messages from the HYPNOSIS List that should be on your computer, check your Spam or Junk email folders.

POSTING MESSAGES & WEB ETIQUETTE
All messages to the entire list must be addressed to hypnosis@listserv.icors.org, known as the "list address".
This forum has an international readership. Please be respectful in your use of language, and avoid using idioms that some readers may not recognize. If you do use acronyms, such as for organizations or types of therapy, please explain the acronym the first time it is displayed in your message.
On some days the list has upwards of 15 postings, although the average is in the 4-8 range. This creates a lot of mail for users who are not receiving the list in daily digest format. Even for those who do get the digest, it still can be a lot to read through. We strongly urge you to be ruthless in trimming quoted material from previous posts when you make a reply. You should also remove the footers that appear at the bottom of every new message.
The default setting for the list is to REPLY to the original sender of the message. In other words, if I send a message to the list in most cases my address will show in the "To:" window when a reader clicks their Reply button. To send a Reply to the entire list, click the REPLY ALL button or command.
Please do not use the list as a chat medium. Remember that everything you post goes to hundreds of people, so use common sense when posting.
Users are welcome to send messages about appropriate upcoming training events to Carol B. Low, Psy.D for inclusion in the HYPNOSIS List Classifieds. Please include a link and phone number about the event. The Classifieds are published on an as-needed basis, but usually weekly
The archives are organized by date and subject. To assist readers in accessing the archived material, please be careful in your use of "subjects". If you are replying
to a current topic, keep the same subject (and please trim the quoted content). If you
are starting a new thread, please create a new subject. I believe many
folks like a link to the former topic as well--for instance, if you were
replying to an old thread but have changed the topic significantly,
include both: "intractable pain (was hypnosis for headache)" or
whatever, thus providing a way for someone to search back through the
entire chain. Click here for additional instructions on using the archives.
POSTING A MESSAGE TO THE CLASSIFIEDS
Subscribers to the HYPNOSIS List can send messages related to personal products (books, videos), services, seminars, conferences, etc. for posting in the Classifieds Section. Carol Low, Psy.D. manages the Classifieds. Please send items to her at hypnosis-request@listserv.icors.org using the following instructions.
- Classifieds that must be screened for the digest are any announcement
not directly sponsored by ASCH, SCEH or a component.
- Classifieds go out late Sunday or early Monday at our discretion.
- Please provide a short text-only description that includes the basic
Ws--what, where, who, when. You may add a link to more detailed
information. Do not send a PDF of your lovely brochure or a link to a
web site or a large HTML file. Send just the text as it will appear in the
Monday announcement.
- The best time to send your message is from late Friday to Sunday before 8pm so
they do not rise up my inbox and get misplaced.

NEW SUBSCRIPTIONS AND ADDRESS CHANGES
Click here to request a new subscription to the HYPNOSIS List. (Figure A)
Changing your subscribed address is easy to do and can be accomplished simply through email messages. To start the process, send an email to the ICORS administrative address at <listserv@listserv.icors.org> with the following text in the message body:
CHANGE HYPNOSIS [INSERT NEW ADDRESS HERE]
The security of the list and your subscription is very important to us, so there are some necessary precautions put in place to make sure someone does not change the address accidentally or maliciously. After sending your initial change request, you will receive a message asking you to confirm the request. Do this by replying to the message with only "OK" in the body of the message. Delete all the other quoted text before sending your confirmation message. Then, you will receive another confirmation request at your "new" email address, and you will need to confirm the second request in the same manner. There are a couple of other notification messages that signal completion of the change, but they do not require a reply.
EXAMPLE: Dr. Smith is currently subscribed as drsmith@funkymail.com. She wants to change her address to drsmith@goodmail.com. From her current subscription address, she sends a message to listserv@listserv.icors.org with the subject line blank and "CHANGE HYPNOSIS drsmith@goodmail.com" in the message body without the brackets and quotation marks. Dr. Smith then receives a message at her "old" address asking to confirm that she wants to change her subscription address. She responds by replying to the message with "OK" (without quotes) as the only text in the message body. A short time later she receives another confirmation request at her "new" email address, and she confirms that in the same manner as the first, simply replying with "OK". All of her previous settings are retained except for her personal password, if one was established.

SETTING UP YOUR SUBSCRIPTION AND CHANGING MAIL DELIVERY SETTINGS
While there are email-based options available for requesting and modifying your subscription, many people find it easier to complete such operations via the web interface (Figure A). Access the "Join or Leave the HYPNOSIS List " page shown below by clicking here. You need to login with your password before making any changes. Click here for information on creating a password.
FIGURE A
You can SUSPEND email delivery without unsubscribing in two ways. Using the web form shown in Figure B, click the "Mail Delivery Disabled Temporarily" option at the bottom of the page and click the UPDATE button.
Alternatively, you can send an email from your subscribed email account to listserv@listserv.icors.org with "SET HYPNOSIS NOMAIL" in the body of the message. Leave the subject line blank.
To RESTART mail delivery, go back to the page shown in Figure B and deselect the "Mail Delivery Disabled Temporarily" option (remember to click the UPDATE button), or send an email message to listserv@listserv.icors.org with "SET HYPNOSIS MAIL " in the body of the message. Leave the subject line blank

UNSUBSCRIBING FROM THE HYPNOSIS LIST
There are two options for unsubscribing from the list (also known as signing off). Please note that you do not need to unsubscribe if you want to stop receiving mail for a temporary period, such as during a vacation or conference trip. In that case, use the "NOMAIL" setting to suspend mail delivery until you return. Click here for information about suspending mail delivery.
The first option for signing off is very straightforward. Simply send an email message from your subscribed address to listserv@listserv.icors.org with "UNSUBSCRIBE HYPNOSIS" in the message body and no subject line. No confirmation is required, and you will be unsubscribed immediately.
Alternatively, use the form in Figure A to unsubscribe from the list.
OBTAINING A WEB MANAGEMENT ACCOUNT AND PASSWORD
Any subscriber can obtain an account to use the web management interface. Your account identification is always your email address, and your password merely confirms that you are the owner of that email address. Be sure to use the email address with which you subscribed to the HYPNOSIS List.
The password for the HYPNOSIS List is not connected to any other account. For example, what you use as a password to access the ASCH Member Section is different. To obtain a password for your e-mail address, follow the "get a new LISTSERV password" link found on the login screen shown in Figure C. Enter your email address and the password you wish to use in the fields provided (Figure D). Then press the "Register Password" button.
FIGURE C

FIGURE D

The LISTSERV software then sends a message to the email address you entered. You must respond to the email message as directed in the message within 48 hours. The password is not registered until you respond to the verification email. This precaution guarantees that you cannot register a password for an email address that does not exist or belongs to someone else. It also prevents another party from hijacking your email address.

SEARCHING THE ARCHIVES
Go to http://listserv.icors.org/archives/hypnosis.html to access the archives page displayed in Figure E-1. The archives are organized into weekly time periods. Clicking on the "Search the Archives" link at the top brings up the search screen shown in Figure E-2. Clicking on a link for one of the archived weeks displays a screen like the one shown in Figure F. For purposes of this tutorial, the author's information for each message is hidden.
