American Society of Clinical Hypnosis
52nd Annual Scientific Meeting and Workshops
March 12-16, 2010    Sheraton Music City      Nashville , TN  37214

"Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy:  Shared Experiences, Shared Questions and Shared Visions"

CALL FOR PAPERS

Our society has a long history of openness, collegiality, and interdisciplinary collaboration.  This tradition of sharing is the focus of this year’s program theme. We are particularly interested in presentations which integrate current research, clinical practice and experience to communicate the contemporary status and synthesized understanding of a particular topic or issue in the field or which develop the current best practice standards for a specific application of hypnosis in clinical settings.  It is hoped that our meeting in Nashville, Tennessee scheduled for March 12-16, 2010 will highlight the very best integration of our current knowledge regarding hypnosis and how most effectively to utilize it for a wide range of clinical problems.  Presentations will include advanced workshops and scientific symposia in all areas related to the use of clinical hypnosis in mental health, medicine, and dentistry.

In addition, a clear statement of educational objectives and a concise abstract will add to the presentation's acceptability. Important items include:

1.      Relevance to program theme

3.      Relevance to hypnosis science

4.      Clarity of educational objectives

5.      Specificity of description of target audience

6.      Clarity of abstract

7.      Quality of integration and synthesis of current knowledge for understanding and/or clinical application

8.      Scientific validity as demonstrated by reference to published literature in peer-reviewed journals

All advanced workshop proposals must clearly delineate an experiential learning component integral to their program and include at least three relevant references from published literature in peer-reviewed journals. In order to adhere to ASCH Standards of Training, all educational objectives must be stated in quantifiable terms. More information is available online at www.asch.net, by calling 630-980-4740, by emailing info@asch.net, or by consultation with an appropriate co-chair.

Advanced workshop co-chairs:

      Shirley McNeal, PhD (berkmont@comcast.net)

Moshe Torem , MD (mstoremmd@yahoo.com)

B. SUBMISSIONS FOR SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM AND SYMPOSIA

Our scientific program will be organized around relevant topical tracks for those in the medical, behavioral and dental health arenas. We especially welcome submissions (papers, clinical and basic research reports, talks, literature reviews, clinical case reports, and models) which provide conceptual or empirical synthesis which advances our understanding of core issues regarding hypnotic phenomena, mechanisms of action, explanatory constructs and clinical efficacy, as well as other research or clinical issues (e.g. clinical outcome, performance, culture, enhancement of other treatment modalities, etc).

Scientific papers will be judged according to the following rank-ordered criteria (highest=first).

1.      Controlled studies with clear outcomes (“pure” research of a specific phenomenon)

2.      Replication studies

3.      Evidenced based approaches (i.e. direct testing of a specific clinical approach)

4.      Qualitative research with relatively low N (at least 10)

5.      Outcome research w/o controls

6.      Research based methodology for clinical populations (e.g. the research says this is the way to get the best results, so here is the suggested, but untested protocol)

7.      Exploratory research with low N

8.      Techniques backed with anecdotal evidence

In addition to describing the participants’ background in hypnosis, abstracts for scientific presentations should state the methods used, summarize the results obtained, list three or more educational objectives, include at least three relevant references from published literature in peer-reviewed journals and offer conclusions reached including research and clinical implications.

C. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The following guidelines are designed to insure that proposals and abstracts produce high quality instruction; qualify participants for appropriate CEUs; and generate information to give instructors useful feedback. Each submission must include a description of participants: List the background and prior knowledge of hypnosis that the presenters assume participants will have.

As an ACCME accredited provider, the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) must insure balance, independence, objectivity and scientific rigor in all of its directly or jointly sponsored educational activities.  In order to do so, research referred to within the content of presentations held at ASCH-sponsored educational events should adhere to Level II-3 and Level III of the following system.  Please be prepared to supply ASCH with references illustrating the rigor of any research that you make reference to within your presentation.

Systems to stratify evidence by quality have been developed, such as this one by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force for ranking evidence about the effectiveness of treatments or screening:

  •  Level I: Evidence obtained from at least one properly designed randomized controlled trial.

  •  Level II-1: Evidence obtained from well-designed controlled trials without randomization.

  •  Level II-2: Evidence obtained from well-designed cohort or case-control analytic studies, preferably from more than one center or research group.

  •  Level II-3: Evidence obtained from multiple time series with or without the intervention. Dramatic results in uncontrolled trials might also be regarded as this type of evidence.

  •  Level III: Opinions of respected authorities, based on clinical experience, descriptive studies, or reports of expert committees.

All interested parties must submit proposals and abstracts using the 2010 Proposal and Abstract Submission Form (RTF format) also available online at 2010 Submission Form.

1)      Please include the type of presentation desired: Advanced Workshop or Symposium.

2)      Name, address, phone and email for all presenters involved are required. The Scientific co-chairs may combine abstracts from single presenters with others connected thematically.

D. Faculty Disclosure

All faculty members will be expected to disclose any and all significant financial or material relationships between faculty member(s) and any manufacturer, supplier, third-party vendor, product or device influencing their presentations at this activity. It is the responsibility of the presenter(s) to ensure that the presentation contains no copyright, patent, or intellectual property (IP) infringements and that all sources of information, whether originating in research or clinical experience or otherwise, in the presentation are properly cited and credited to the original authors. ASCH accepts no responsibility for any IP infringements. By accepting ASCH’s offer to present at the 52nd Annual Scientific Meetings and Workshops, the presenter(s) agree(s) to hold ASCH, its employees, board members and vendors harmless in the event of any litigious IP infringements. Incomplete submissions that do not adhere to relevant guidelines will not be considered.
